Treatment for OSA

Untreated OSA results in disrupted sleep as the airway repeatedly narrows and collapses throughout the night which in turn leads to the related symptoms. (For more information on OSA visit www.OSAUK.org)

The main treatment option for obstructive sleep apnoea involves Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) therapy which delivers air at required pressures throughout the night, preventing your airway from collapse, allowing you to maintain restful sleep. The pressure is delivered from a small, portable device beside your bed via a mask worn over the nose or nose and mouth as needed.

You will only receive CPAP therapy following a recommendation by a physician. It is essential for patients to receive the correct education, advice and support when starting on CPAP to ensure you obtain maximum comfort, usage and control of your symptoms, allowing you to reclaim the quality of life you are used to. You may wish your GP to refer you to an NHS sleep unit, alternatively we can offer this service and will be happy to discuss your options with you.

If you choose the Centre for Healthy Sleep for your CPAP care, our team of experienced clinicians will take time during the consultation to assess your sleeping pattern, select the correct type and size of mask for you and allow you time to acclimatise to the treatment, with the reassurance of experts at hand. They will ensure you are comfortable and feel confident before you leave and that you have all the information you need for a successful start to your therapy.

We will provide telephone support to ensure you get the best from your treatment from the outset. We will arrange to review the data from your device after 4-6 weeks. This can be done remotely using datacard technology. We will be able to liaise with your doctor as needed to keep them informed of your progress.

We are also able to offer patients the opportunity to trial CPAP treatment on a rental scheme for the initial 4 week period, allowing you chance to adjust. This gives you time to check that this type of treatment works for you before purchasing the device. Rental is not offered on masks.

Please note all newly diagnosed patients will require a referral from a physician to commence CPAP treatment. Patients who have been diagnosed from outside the Centre for Healthy Sleep service will require a referral form from a doctor. Alternatively you can download the PDF Ref Form for your physician to sign; then call us to arrange a consultation for treatment set up.

You can come back to the Centre for Healthy Sleep on an annual basis to have your treatment reviewed if you wish.
